Overview
Winona County is excited to be able to offer a free sharps disposal program to all county residents. The county is accepting household-generated sharps from Winona County residents only - at its Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility at 225 W 2nd Street in Winona. Open hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.
Any county resident who uses sharps (needles, syringes, and lancets) when treating themselves for medical conditions such as diabetes are eligible for this free disposal service. Only household-generated sharps will be accepted at the facility, however. The facility cannot accept business-generated sharps.
Packaging Sharps
Sharps brought into the HHW facility must be packaged in a red box or plastic laundry detergent container. The containers must be labeled "sharps", and the twist cap must be secured with tape.
Containers will not be accepted if they are not properly packaged or contain any other type of waste, medical or otherwise. If unacceptable materials are detected, the sharps container will be rejected by facility staff.
Sharps can be brought to the Winona County HHW facility during regular hours of operation. For questions regarding the disposal of household sharps, please contact Kim Nelson at 507-457-6462.
